PVC Waterstop still stands as the superior option compared to Swelling Waterstop. Why? Let’s find out…
Both PVC Waterstop and swelling waterstop are generally used for concrete structures subjected to high water pressure, such as water tanks, dams, and even tunnels where waterstop installation is crucial.
However, in practice, there are several types of waterstops, including PVC Waterstop and Swelling Waterstop. Many contractors remain confused about which type of waterstop is best suited for their current projects. Let’s discuss and analyze them one by one.
Material Composition
- PVC Waterstop is considered superior because PVC (polyvinyl chloride) offers excellent durability, flexibility, and chemical resistance. The flexibility of PVC allows it to adapt effectively to structural movements of buildings.
- The common material for swelling waterstop is bentonite, which has the ability to expand when exposed to water, combined with polymers to enhance its performance.
Application Method
- PVC Waterstop is embedded within concrete during the pouring process, positioned at the center of joints.
- Swelling Waterstop is installed along construction joints or gaps vulnerable to leakage. Typically, installation involves embedding it in concrete during the pouring process.
Advantages of Each
- PVC Waterstop is highly resistant to chemicals, making it suitable for various environments. It offers excellent flexibility that can accommodate environmental movements, and PVC is a durable material with a long service life.
- Swelling Waterstop provides an additional layer of protection against water leakage because its components can expand when exposed to water.
Effectiveness in Addressing Honeycomb Issues
- PVC Waterstop is considered more effective than Swelling Waterstop because it has a wider shape, ensuring that honeycomb formations at concrete joints don’t allow water to bypass the width of the PVC Waterstop.
- Swelling Waterstop is deemed less effective because the material isn’t wide enough, allowing honeycomb formations to exceed the material height, which means water can still pass through the swelling waterstop and cause leakage.
